The 3Cs of Life: Choice, Chance and Change

3 Cs of lifeA friend sent this note to my wife and I today.

No, this is not the first time I see this quote so naturally, I just ignored it in the morning.

However, when I was fetching my son from school in the afternoon, I walked past a resident resting area and I overheard a conversation between some ‘uncles’. I call them uncle because they are elderly citizens, somewhat in their sixties. Well I did not actually hear their conversation but rather, I heard one of the uncles exclaiming loudly the following, “I am a Chinese. I don’t speak English. I am not Ang Moh. (Caucasian)”

Although this is just a general statement but it triggered the recollection of the little note our friend sent to us this morning. We all have the choice to choose.

Every day we make choices. Some choices are of less significance to our daily lives. Things like choosing what to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or what mode of transport we choose to travel from one place to another are choices of little significance to our daily lives. Then there are choices we make that makes a bigger impact to our lives. Like which school to attend, what friends we hang out with, and what career path we choose. This choices will impact our lives in a greater way than the former ones. And then there are life changing choices that can shift our entire lives. Like committing ourselves to a relationship that lasts for an entire lifetime, and the choice to be responsible parents can affect our children’ future.

Back to the uncle. Well, from my perspective he too had made a choice. He made a choice not to change, not to learn English. There is no right or wrong choice. That’s just his choice. But I believe he has failed to understand that the power is within him to choose and that his choice can potentially change his life, perhaps in this instance, his language skills. Somehow, I feel that he had let his limitations limit his potential.

The reason I bring up this is because recently, I have been working with my brother-in-law and his team from Solidum Solutions to educate our senior citizens in Singapore to be better equipped with smartphone technology in today’s digital age. This is in conjunction with the country’s initiative to empower our senior citizens to be part of our fast growing smart nation.

I am extremely delighted to see many senior citizens are proactively keen on learning and developing their skills further. I am even more delighted to see that there are those who attend our English classes even when they do not understand English well. Of course, we do try to accommodate to them the best we could. I am proud to say that this group of seniors embrace change and made the choice to embrace technology instead of avoiding them due to limitations in the mind.

By the way, the courses that we are conducting now include teaching senior citizens in Singapore how to use WhatsApp, FaceBook, Transportation navigation apps and some basic introduction of the world of smartphones and devices. Currently, the company is working with People’s Association and Community Clubs to bring the courses to our people and for those who are keen to know more, you may visit your local community club for more information. The project is called Senior Academy.

Life is all about choices. We are where we are today because of the choice we made five years ago. And every day we are faced with situations where we have to make a choice, or a decision.

What about you?

Are you happy with the choices you made five years ago?

If not, what are you doing to change that?

Are you willing to make the choice, to take the chance you didn’t take five years ago, to change your life. Think about that, and share with me your thoughts in comments below.
