I remember when I was in Primary School, one of the comments on my school report card was “Zhirong (my chinese name) is a passive boy. He needs to be more active”. Back then, I thought that active is good and passive is bad.

Today, I have a different view of this word, although what I mean here is in a totally different context as compared to the example I quoted above. Today, to me, PASSIVE is eternity.

What am I referring to?

I am referring to passive income.

And what is passive income?

Passive income to me means that the income that you receive is not a direct result of your work. Don’t get me wrong. It is still a result of the action that you took. It is just that you no longer need to use much of your time to earn that income.

To illustrate, we all work everyday. Whether you are working as an employed worker, or if you are running your own business, you are working. And what you are doing is trading your time and efforts for money. An hour of work may earn you $10, or a month of work may earn you $4000 etc. This is what we call active income. Simply put, active income is trading your time for money. Even if you are an insurance agent, your commission will come from the times that you have spent with your clients.

Passive income, on the other hand, is making money without trading your time for it. Of course, you need to put in effort. The good thing is once significant amount of efforts are put in, you slowly gain the benefit of money coming in without the need to trade your time for it. Hmm… Passive income sounds interesting. How can I get passive income?

There are many ways to earn passive income. Here, I am only going to share 3 ways to earning passive income. Remember, they all need effort to start with but once you have gained enough experience, the cash just flows in with minimal effort.

1) Investing

One of the ways to earn passive income is to start saving for investments. Many people say investing comes with high risks. Well, the best investor in the world, Warren Buffett says that investing is only risky for people who do not understand it. Given the proper knowledge and experience, investing pays. Do not expect to get rich overnight. Set your investment goals and start by learning about how to invest before throwing in your money without the proper know-how.

2) Networking Marketing

Many people dread hearing the term network marketing or multi-level marketing (MLM). While I agree that network marketing has earned its notorious reputation from some ‘evil’ companies in the past, today networking marketing offers a totally different competitive edge. Companies today focus on providing quality products and services to their clients. And it is through this platform that allows an individual to skyrocket his income potential. And it is also through this platform that one can earn passive income, when the right efforts are put in. If you are skeptical of network marketing, I strongly urge you to study the business model and the company carefully before jumping into any conclusion. If you find the company to be malicious, by all means avoid them but if you find potential in the business with a reputable company, just know that this is a way for you to achieve passive income in the long run.

3) Internet Marketing

With the boom of the Internet, it is not hard to know that many have already turned to making money online. While many may think that it is an already highly saturated business, think again. Everyday, there are millions of users searching for something to buy on the Internet. Internet marketing is all about marketing to these people. There are so many markets for you to choose from. Do you think it is saturated? I think not. What I think is you need to find out what market you want to market to and how. Again, knowledge and experience is important here. You can gain knowledge by sourcing from the Internet. A lot of information is offered free, although there are paid ones too. Decide on which area you want to focus on and if you find a good course on that, learn as much as you can and just take action. The good thing about Internet marketing is it is both an active income and a passive income. It is active because you need to constantly keep up with times and know what you are doing. It is passive because if you have set up a marketing campaign, it is always there and you may get someone buying from you for something you were selling or marketing years ago.

So there you have it. Who says active is better than passive? To me, it is important to be active now but in the long run, say, 10 to 20 years down the road, I will want passive income to work for me, when I have less energy for work.

Meanwhile, there are some challenges that I face in my Internet Marketing journey. The great thing about them are they let me learn and allows me to stay focused, very focused. Strategies were implemented, and changed. In fact, they are continuously changing.

I know I will see results soon…
