Success Is A Choice

“Success Is A Choice” is a topic I have heard over and over again in our monthly trainings. Throughout the years honestly, I did not feel how significant this sentence is. Maybe it is because I am not successful yet, in my own terms. Perhaps it is because it sounded like theory to me all along. Until…

2 February 2016

The day is my daughter Jade Lee‘s birthday. She had just turned 10 this year. Wow! How time flies. My little darling hits her first two figure age. It seems like just yesterday when she was a baby in my arms. It seemed like just yesterday when I carried her to sleep, and numbed my left arm till I can’t feel a thing.

Time really passed by so far.

Anyway, on 2 Feb 2016, this is how I spent my day.

After sending my daughter to school, my wife and I travelled to Sembawang Hills for our breakfast and short meet up with one of our business partners. We had the privilege to learn from our business partner Mr. Gavin Sim.

After our breakfast, we went our separate ways and my wife and I headed to Chinatown to meet a friend for lunch. We had Bak Kut Teh for lunch at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (Chinatown Point). This is my first time eating at this outlet and I must say it tastes better than A-One Bak Kut Teh. By the way, Bak Kut Teh is a popular dish served in Malaysia and Singapore, where meat (usually pork) is cooked and served in herbal or pepper broth.

Next, we went for our leaders’ training with our most respected Mr. Rayne Ho and Ms. Angela Liew. I shall not discuss the contents of our training but I must say these few hours spent are worth millions.

Finally, before proceeding home to celebrate our daughter Jade’s birthday, we bought a cake and made our way to fetch her from her ballet class. We had a simple cake cutting celebration in the evening. I also brought her to Amped Trampoline Park in River Valley on another day to continue her celebration. It was tiring but every minute spent with her was priceless.

Why am I sharing this? And what does this have anything to do with my title – Success is a choice?

Well, as my wife and I went out for lunch this afternoon, I realised that many people are not having their lunch. They were rushing through their lunch. I see many people dressed in professional office wear queueing for their food, and then devouring their food before rushing off. My wife and I were in our casual clothing.

This made me think. The only reason I can enjoy some form of ‘freedom’ is because of a choice I made years back. The choice I made enabled me to live a very different life today. Yes, I am still busy working for my finances and my future but while I am busy, I now have the choice to enjoy the process of working hard. I remember one of our business sharers shared that as a headhunter, she often witnesses people going to work but not enjoying their work. I was one of them. In fact, I used to dread going to work and as a result, I was a ‘MC king’ often falling sick and finding reasons not to go to work.

What is happiness? To me, happiness is enjoying what you do, every single moment. Take my daughter’s birthday for example. To some people, having a happy birthday means celebrating lavishly with the child. To me, happiness is making full use of my time enjoying what I do, and also making sure my daughter gets her due attention and celebration when it is time to shower my my love.

What is happiness? Happiness is working on something that I know will give me the result I want. Happiness is spending time with my wife meeting people, and sneaking out for a movie or two in between.

What is happiness? Happiness is helping people who believed in me to get the result they want, change the health they deserve, and grow our mindsets together, as a friend, as a family.

Sometimes, I live a busy day. Sometimes, I am pretty free. Regardless of how I spend the day, happiness is spending it the way I want it, and not the way I don’t want it.

Am I successful? Not yet in my own terms. But I am already grateful for many things that I have now that I know many are still finding. I have choice.

With this post, I wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year 2016 and may you find your dreams in 2016. And while you are on this post, feel free to download my ebook “Happiness In A Box”. You may find some secrets or treasures that may change your life, or at least your perspective of life. Who knows? As I always say, “You don’t know until you try.”

Have a nice day!
