Science, Technology And Aging

dr-ang-poon-liat-s-book-set.jpgThe other day I had a chat with my mom. We spoke of different things. Work, family, kids, and health. I was showing her what Dr. Ang Poon Liat of Thomson Medical, author of The Wonders of Nutrition and Roadmaps to Recovery, said of aging and how we can age gracefully through influencing genetic expressions through nutrition and supplements.

Dr. Ang Poon Liat has written the following books to help more people understand that proper nutrition can positively affect our well being. My wife and I had the fortune to attend one of his talks and his studies are very much aligned with our beliefs.

Anyway, I was telling her how I related to my friends about how my dad started accepting supplements and benefited from it. It all started with mom. Being the more open-minded parent, my mom started our weight management program and effectively slimmed down years ago. We subsequently introduced other products to her and the benefits were truly demonstrated on her over time, including the loss of fibroid and cyst in her body naturally without surgery.

My dad, on the other hand, was the less receptive person. It was not easy convincing him. Moreover, us children know it is really not so easy to persuade him when his mind is made up. The not-so-nice word to describe him was ‘stubborn’.

Like insurance, I guess it was a waste of money to him to consume ‘stuff’ that he can’t relate to and could not feel the immediate benefit. Nevertheless, seeing how my mom changed over the years, and with the help of my mom’s relentless persuasion, dad finally agreed to start taking supplements for his better health.

As my mom and I spoke, I was telling her how science and technology has and is changing the way we live so much over the past years. I told her that google even made claims that man can live up to 500 years old in the future. She said she does not believe it. I told her neither do I but I do not discount the fact that with technological advancements, it is possible.

I shared with her that forty years ago if someone were to tell anyone that there will be a small handheld device that can be used to make phone calls, send and receive mails overseas in an instant, take photos, videos, ask for answers on what we all the world wide web, buy things on it, play games on it, and do so many other things, people will call that someone crazy. But today, all this is possible through technology. This thing is simply called a smartphone. In today’s world, this is so common that even a two year old kid knows how to handle one.

The same thing goes for the living longer, living younger concept. Many people now may not believe today that it is possible to live beyond a hundred years old and certainly no one will believe we can live to 500. But I told my mom that living till 500 is possible one day, given enough time for us to witness the advancements in science and technology. Today, there are many organisations conducting research on living longer, younger. Give us another thirty to forty years perhaps, and we may already see people living beyond 150 years old I believe. It may become common too.

Anyway, back to my dad. My dad is a special person in our family. He worked hard all his years to provide for us. Though not wealthy, we never had a day without food or clothes. We grew up in a humble family of five and all our needs were catered for. As the man of the house, we kids respected him, and feared him in a certain way. His word was law, and we had to play by the rules. Therefore naturally for him, he would not tell us how well or how much he had benefited from the supplements he took.

But there is one thing I know…

He would tell my mom to reorder when supply runs out.

That, I told my friend, is the best indication that it is at least working for him.

I am glad my parents and parent-in-laws are on supplements to keep their health well in check. Over the years, I have personally witnessed their improvements in their energy and physical states and I am happy for them. My mom just told my wife the other day that someone commented she looks great and young given her age. At the same time, it saddens me to see some of my friends’ parents aging away and falling prey to illnesses. Nevertheless, it all boils down to individual choice and belief I guess.

To end the note, I just want to share that the world is changing so rapidly that many of us are unable to catch up with the advances of the world. There are already many solutions available to help people age gracefully and prevent falling prey to diseases. The only thing that stands in the way of better health is choice.

When we keep an open mind to things, sometimes solutions will present themselves to us but when we close our minds, we close our chance to choose, and to choose wisely.

Here’s a recent photo of me and my mom. I am grateful of this moment.
