Lesson Learned

Today I’d like to share something that happened to me last evening.

My wife was starting a blog on her own and while typing, I popped over and offered her advice on how to start a blog. Perhaps I was eager to share with her what is blogging about and I told her that she needs to be truthful about her feelings in what she writes. She got offended and said that I was implying that she is not truthful. That actually did not cross my mind.

Now, normally this would’ve lead to a disagreement or argument. In the past, I would be angry at her for making accusations at me and we might end up not speaking to each other for the rest of the night. Well, we still didn’t speak much for the night but this time, I told myself that I have to back off and use what I had learned to get out of the situation and not to linger on negative thoughts which are not helpful.

I’m glad I did that because today, when I think further about it, I realized that it was my approach that was wrong. I should have reframed my words to let her understand that I am making a suggestion instead of telling her what to do. If I put my suggestion across in a positive way, I could have avoided an unnecessary misunderstanding.

And I’m glad that I have my moment of realization today. If I continue to react like I did in the past, then the same thing will happen over and over again. Only when I realize what went wrong and change from my experience will I grow stronger and wiser everyday. Remember, for things to change around me, I must change first. That is my commitment for now.

Change has to come from me and not others.

The second thing I’d like to share is I received a very inspiring e-mail from a course mate of mine.

His name is Mun and he has started and is running 3 businesses in a span of 6 months. What is inspiring from his e-mail is not his success story nor how he became successful.

What inspired me is despite being so successful (at least to me), he has put all that he learned from the same course I attended and put in a lot more action. He has set very clear goals and has drawn up a ‘Vision Board’ to visualize his goals. To me, it’s a very empowering tool and I must take time to do one for myself.

This is how his Vision Board looks like. Stay tuned for mine.
