How Much Is Your Television?

watching television

Most people will begin to think of the brand and model of their television they own and the cost of that TV when they are asked the following question:

How Much Is Your Television?

or

How Much Does Your Television Cost You?

The question I am asking today is not how much your television costs. Rather, I am asking you what is the cost of watching your television?

The average adult watches 25 to 30 hours of television a week (based on America and UK), so that takes up about close to 25% of awake time spent every day on the television. This also means over your lifetime of say 80 years, you would have wasted more than 100,000 hours on the television, or over 4,100 days, or 11 years of your life, only on watching television alone. Scary? Read on…

You will be surprised to realize how modern television is influencing your life every day as you watch it unknowingly. That is why my question above is how much does your television cost you? And it is not meant to question you no the price of your television.

So how much exactly is your television costing you? Or rather, how much is watching your television going to cost you?

1. Prime Time and Your Wealth

Television prime time is typically between 7pm to 10pm in the evening. The reason it is called prime time is because viewership is at its highest at this time as most people would have returned home from a hard day’s work and this is the best time to unwind and relax — in front of the television.

That is the reason why you see the most advertisements during these hours on the TV and also why these advertisement slots are the most expensive.

While it is prime time to the TV stations and the advertisers, do note that this is also prime time for you. Note this: The difference between a normal person and a rich and successful person is how the 2 make use of their ‘prime time’. Usually, the normal or poor person will choose to sit in front of the television, have a big cup of coke, some chips and entertain themselves away through the evening. The rich, on the other hand, uses their prime time differently. This is the best time for them to read a book, work on a project that can bring in extra income, build a skill, attend seminars for self improvement, or do anything that helps increase their value. Over time, you can see the difference between the two who choose to use their prime time differently.

Besides wealth, sitting in front of your television also takes you away from quality time from your family. Many will think that they are spending ‘quality time’ with their family members watching the same TV program together but they are wrong. Yes, you may be spending time together as a family but this is definitely not quality time together.

2. Watch What You Watch

Do you know that the media is designed to make you spend money and not earn money? When you switch on the television, it will begin to tell you that you need to buy many things — from shoes to bags to cars to apartments. Yes, you need this and you need that. Your perception of the world is simply shaped by TV commercials and you will be spending your money buying things you do not need in no time.

This is what the TV is designed and made for. To let you know all you ever need is the next purchase, and the next item never ends. Also, many people will be saying that they only watch news to enhance their horizon of the world. Be very careful because most of the time, what you watch are negative news because they attract more viewership. I am not saying you cannot watch the local news but if you know the harm it can bring you, you will avoid watching it.

Basically, the more TV you watch the more fearful you will be. Imagine every single day you receive negative news about the world and every commercial telling you that you are not good enough and you need the newest shoe, the latest mobile phone and the coolest apartment to make you feel better and look better. Do you think you will have better self-esteem? What I mean to say is while it looks harmless, the television is actually putting a lot of stress on your life unknowingly.

3. Health

Watching too much television is also costing your health, especially if you are one who eats while sitting in front of the television for hours. Rather than going for a walk or run to burn of those extra fats, you are putting on an average of 300 calories to your TV time on a daily basis. Imagine what that can do to you in the long run. This is the reason why most people grow fat and become unhealthy as they grow older.

TV will also make you become more stressed as you put those 4 hours a day on your TV, you will soon realize you do not have enough time for many things in your life. Every day you put off your household chores, your family time, exercise time and many more important tasks, and then you hit panic mode when you realize that you need to rush in order to get the proper things done.

Now that you realize what your television is costing you, it is time to make a decision — to switch it off for good and to look at the more important things in your life.

Are you getting and enjoying the life you want and you think you deserve? If not, are you doing the right thing to start earning the life that you desire?
