How Much Are You Worth?

Recently, I heard someone mention this topic, “How much are you worth?”

What struck me is the answer that follows. Yes, it is an answer that I have never heard of and have never given thought to. This answer totally changed my perspective of how much I am worth, or rather, what is my self worth?

self worthCoincidentally, I met up with an old friend recently. We caught up over our family, our lifestyles, our changes over the years. He is actually an old colleague of mine before I left the company to pursue my own dreams. He, on the other hand, remains faithful to the company for almost close to twenty years. It is commendable in these days that someone remains so faithful to a company.

We chatted on and I realised that the reason he stayed with the company for so many years is because he has his commitments to his family. As the sole breadwinner, he has his reasons to stay committed to his duties and to his job.

I shared with him an opportunity. At slightly above 40 years of age, I shared with him that life can offer much more than merely working for an income. I shared that life can be colourful and he has the choice to change many things that are happening to him, as long as he is ready for it. His reply was he is not a risk-taker and he prefers a simple life. I respected his answer.

However, in my mind, I know that today, not taking risk is actually a high risk. In today’s society, I am very clear that wages are no longer enough to survive and thrive. Especially in Singapore, where retirement age is being suggested to be raised to 70, it is important to plan for our future while we are still young. Because we still have a long way to live, and because if we do not plan early, many will suffer financially in the later years. I also know that generally, as one reaches old age, the value that we can offer to our company is no longer aligned to the salary that we take and when the value of work we offer declines, the inevitable will occur.

So what has this got to do with the question, “How much are you worth?”

Well, when you are an employee, your ‘worth’ is basically determined by others – your manager, your company, your Humans Resource department, people whom may not even know you well enough to determine your value. And for many years, I was not aware of this until I opened my mind and heart to understand. Now, it does not make sense to me to let my value, or worth be determined by a complete stranger (most of the time your worth at work is determined not even by the interviewer but by your HR department). Today, I have absolute control in determining my own worth, or in this aspect, my income.

Back to the question “How much are you worth?”

I have always had the impression that there is a certain value tagged to the word ‘worth’. I would think that I am ‘worth’ $3,000 a month, or $5,000 a month, or perhaps $100,000 a year. I always thought my worth is measurable in terms of money. This mindset changed after I hear this answer…

“How much are you worth?”

The answers could be one thousand dollars, ten thousand dollars, a hundred thousand, a million, ten million or even a billion or more. Whatever the answer is, the next question prompted me to think hard.

“Let’s say you tell me that you are worth ten million. What if I offer ten million dollars to you to exchange for your heart. Will you give me your heart for ten million dollars, which is what you think you are worth?”

This struck me thinking hard, and I know for no amount of money will I ever want to give my heart to someone else. From this, I know there is no ‘amount’ tied to this question.

How much I am worth? I am worth everything this world can offer. And I am worth everything I can offer to the world. Because I am unique and there is only one me. I now know that self worth is not how much people recognise or pay me for. It is how much I value myself and the acknowledgement of my contribution to others.
