Good… Bad… Who Knows? – A Short Story

Once upon a time, a king was out hunting when he injured his finger.
His doctor, who always accompanies him on a hunt helped put a bandage on the wound.

“Is it going to be fine?” the king asked the doctor.

The doctor replied, “Good… Bad… Who knows?”

By the time the king returned from the hunt, the wound had become infected. So the doctor carefully cleaned up the wound, put some ointment on it and bandaged it up again.

“Are you sure it will be alight?, asked the worried king.

“Good… Bad… Who knows?”, answered the doctor again.

A few days later, the finger became so badly infected they had to amputate it.
The king was extremely furious with the doctor by now that he ordered his men to throw the doctor into the dungeon.

“See how you like being in jail, doctor!” yelled the king.

The doctor calmly said, “Prison sire? Good… Bad… Who knows?”

The king told him, “You are INSANE and incompetent!”

A few weeks later, the king went out hunting again, but this time he got lost in the forest and was captured by the forest people. It was their holy day and they needed a sacrifice for their gods. They tied the king to a tree and started dancing and chanting around him.

Just when they were about to slit his throat the priest yelled out loud, “STOP!!!!!” “This man cannot be our sacrifice. He is NOT Perfect!, He has only 9 fingers!!!” And so they set him free.

The king went back to the palace and the moment he got back, he went straight to the dungeon and apologised to the doctor.

“You were right”, he said, “Losing my finger was a good thing. You saved my life and I am eternally indebted to you! I’m so sorry it was bad for me to put you in this dungeon.”

The doctor then smiled and said, “Bad? It was VERY GOOD that you had me locked here, otherwise I would have been with you on the hunt and guess who will be the sacrifice then?”

When things happen to us, there is always reasons to find something negative about it especially when it does not happen in our favour. But there’s always a reason to everything that happens and sometimes, it may be helpful for us not to judge the event first.

Because you never really know if something is really good or bad and if we judge the event as a bad event, most likely it will eventually turn out not the way we hoped it would. Instead, let the event unfold itself while we take charge of what we can do to either make the best of it or to find alternative to turn things around. We just need to receive the event as it happened and move on. My belief is somehow, the universe will find its way to help you in a positive way.

So if you think you are in a ‘bad’ situation now, I hope this short story helped you in its own way. Remember, good or bad… who knows?
