It is not difficult to set a goal that you know you want to achieve. I have previously blogged about how to set your goals and the SMART ways of goal setting.
Once we set out our goals, we are usually excited about it and start taking action. Some of us will eventually reach our goals while others may not. What made the difference between the two? Is it a stroke of luck? Or is it perseverance by the determined? To me, it is the ability to set defined goals, and the ability to stay focused on achieving them.
Today, I will share the 10 ways to stay focused, so that you can maintain your energy high when pursuing your goals. It is working for me, so I believe that it will work for you too.
1. Have a Compelling Reason
To stay focused, always ask yourself first why do you want to achieve this goal? If you have an extremely strong reason behind your goal or goals, there will be a high level of energy that will constantly motivate you to move towards your goals. Perhaps your reason is to reach financial freedom, or perhaps to contribute to society. Whatever the reason, make it a compelling one. If you want to reach financial freedom, think of why you want it for? For yourself? Your family? Or so that you can contribute more of your time to charity work? Make it a must for you to achieve.
2. Visualize your Objectives
Visualize yourself achieving your goal. Picture it in your mind. Better still, write it down or draw it. Put up your goals on a poster and put it up where you can see it everyday. It helps. Be motivated by what you see and think of it every day.
3. Believe in Yourself
Let’s face it. No matter how big your dreams are or how much you want to achieve your goal, you are not going to achieve it unless you start believing in yourself. This is a crucial component. If you don’t believe in yourself, how will you find the energy to push yourself to take action? Will you? Believe in yourself that you can do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. This will help you build a strong foundation in staying focused.
4. Plan Your Path of Success
Always have a plan. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Create a plan and make the plan an interesting one. Document milestones in the plan and focus on the milestones one at a time. Plan from short-term, to middle-term, and then long-term. When there is a plan, and especially one that motivates you, it increases the ability to stay focused on the plan. Do not plan something that is too complicated. Make a plan that is simple and effective.
5. Take Action
With a plan, you need to take action. Taking action is easy at first as you are usually excited about your goals and plans. But when obstacles come in, staying focused becomes a little bit harder. It is at this stage that you need to remind yourself of the first three steps, especially the first one. Rediscover your reason for your goals, visualize your objective or goals again, and believe in yourself that you can do it.
6. Have a Positive Attitude
Learn to have take a positive attitude to life. Do not limit it to your goals but rather, adopt a positive thinking attitude to your everyday life. You will soon discover that you will be more focused in almost everything you do. You will also realize that good things will come to you automatically, as your positivity naturally attracts positive people. You will also begin to stay focused on positive aspects of things and disregard the negative. 7. Remove Distractions
Trust me, you will not only face obstacles in your path to achieving your goals. Distractions will always surface to hinder your progress. They are not going to be as tough to crack as obstacles but they do slow down your progress. Distractions are everywhere. Your TV, your phones, new e-mails, the list goes on. To get rid of distractions, set a time for work, and minimize devices around you. If you like to watch TV, go to a place where there is no TV. Switch off your phone for one or two hours while you concentrate on your work. Check your e-mails after you’ve completed your tasks. Focus on what needs to be focused.
8. Form a Support Group
If you have business partners or someone sharing the same passion or goal as you, it will be good to form an alliance with them so that you can support each other in achieving your goals. Share with one another how each of you can help each other. It can be through contribution of ideas, checking on each member’s progress, or helping each other with their projects. Forming a support group and encouraging each other also helps establish long-term relationships which may be beneficial for future ventures.
9. Monitor Your Progress
It is important to monitor your progress in order to maintain your focus. Monitoring progress against your milestones enables you to decide on what is the next course of action, as well as to review the past achievements. It will also bring you back on course should you go out of focus in your business plan.
10. Reward Accordingly
Finally, when everything seems to be in place and you are still maintaining your focus well on your goals, it is time to give yourself a pat on the back. Reward yourself accordingly when the time is right and take a break. You need to recharge yourself in order to continue to stay focused and pursue your goals.
I hope that these 10 ways to stay focused are useful for you and may you be successful in achieving your goals.
